Ashtanga Yoga...

Harjean also teaches Ashtanga classes, both large and small size classes. Ashtanga yoga is also Harjean's personal yoga practice where she dedicates six days a week to her own practice.

What is Ashtanga yoga?

Ashtanga yoga when translated means eight-limbed yoga and refers to the eight limbs outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra. This outlines moral and ethical guidelines, postures, breath work, sense withdrawal, concentration, and meditation. These eight steps act as guidelines on how to live a meaningful life.

Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic flow sequence that synchronizes breath with a series of postures. This gives an intense mind and body 'workout'. Ashtanga yoga heals the body and mind and all levels from beginner to experienced can reap the benefits.

By controlling the breath and holding the body in steady postures we create harmony. These postures allow us to release muscle tension, stretch and tone muscles, lubricate joints, massage internal organs, increase circulation and help in weight control. Other benefits of yoga are greater resistance to stress, a stronger immune system, a balanced nervous system, decreased cholesterol and blood sugar levels and lower blood pressure.
